Rolling Up, Rolling Down

AKA Rolling Down the River

Maritime-themed Song

Words and Music © 1982 by Jack Forbes (D. 1/30/2016)

Sung with kind permission of Jack Forbes.

Chorus:
Rolling up. Rolling down.
We’ll all get drunk in Tilbury town
Twenty-four hours to turn around.
To go rolling down the river.

Call: When first I saw a TEU.
Response: Rolling up, rolling down
Call: I wondered where they stowed the crew
Response: To go rolling down the river. (Chorus)

Call: Well cargo comes in TEUs.
Response: Rolling up, rolling down
Call: A 20-foot box, boys, filled with booze.
Response: To go rolling down the river. (Chorus)

Call: There’s a Tilbury girl called Kettle Jane.
Response: Rolling up, rolling down
Call: First on the boil then off again.
Response: She goes rolling down the river. (Chorus)

Call: She’s got a mate called Teapot Anne.
Response: Rolling up, rolling down
Call: She gets well brewed. She likes a man.
Response: She goes rolling down the river. (Chorus)

Call: Tilbury girls go round in pairs,
Response: Rolling up, rolling down
Call: You’ll never catch them unawares.
Response: To go rolling down the river. (Chorus)

Call: Well, we’re the boys can see her through.
Response: Rolling up, rolling down
Call: To hell with the cargo and the TEUs.
Response: Let’s go down the river. (Chorus)

Jack wrote this about his song, “I wrote and recorded the song ‘Rolling down the River’ in 1982 for a radio programme about Tilbury Docks. It has since been used in an Educational Drama production, a Folk Theatre presentation and also as a Morris Dance, as well as being sung all over the world. It can be heard wherever there are shanty sessions at folk festivals and festivals of the sea. There is an American version* and a Polish version (sung of course in Polish).”

Jack Forbes was a member of the Hoy Shanty Crew and Slow Loris. Jack passed away on January 30, 2016; many kind words about him were shared on MudCat Cafe: https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=159151.

* We adapted Jack’s original song and perform “the American version.”
