Lyrics
Randy Dandy O
Capstan and Pump Shanty
Traditional
Now we are ready to head for the Horn,
(Resp) Way, hey, roll an’ go!
Our boots an’ our clothes boys are all in the pawn,
(Resp) Timme rollickin’ randy dandy O!
Chorus:
Heave a pawl, oh, heave away,
Way, hey, roll an’ go!
The anchor’s on board an’ the cable’s all stored,
Timme rollickin’ randy dandy O!
Come breast the bars, bullies, an’ heave her away,
(Resp) Way, hey, roll an’ go!
Soon we’ll be sailin’ her ‘way down the Bay,
(Resp) Timme rollickin’ randy dandy O! (Chorus)
Roust ‘er up, bullies, the wind’s blowin’ free,
(Resp) Way, hey, roll an’ go!
So get the glad-rags on an’ drive ‘er to sea
(Resp) Timme rollickin’ randy dandy O! (Chorus)
Get up on the deck, you parish-rigged bums.
(Resp) Way, hey, roll an’ go!
Get yer hands from yer pockets and don’t suck yer thumbs
(Resp) Timme rollickin’ randy dandy O! (Chorus)
We’re outward bound for Valipo Bay,
(Resp) Way, hey, roll an’ go!
Get crackin’, m’ lads, ’tis a hell o’ a way!
(Resp) Timme rollickin’ randy dandy O!
Chorus:
Heave a pawl, oh, heave away,
Way, hey, roll an’ go!
The anchor’s on board an’ the cable’s all stored,
Timme rollickin’ randy dandy O!
(Repeat)
Song Notes
Dean does not sing all of the traditional verses known as there is much horseplay from the rest of the crew for this song and the audience is paying very little attention to the actual music.
1 The Horn: Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America (55°56′ south and 67°19′ west). Named “Hoorn” after a Netherlands town that was home to Dutch explorer Willem Corneliszoon Schouten.
2 Pawl: a ratcheting device on the capstan that prevented it from turning backward.
3 Warping: Moving a vessel by means of a hawser
Hawser: A heavy line used for mooring, kedging, towing or as a temporary anchor line.
4 Lock: A construction for navigating between different water levels on rivers and canals using controlled changes in water levels to float the boat to its new level.
5 “Timme” is not referring to a South Park character, but is a corruption of “To me!” It is a call for the sailors to sing with the Shantyman.
6 Breast the bars: leaning deeply so as to push the weight of the body at the chest against the capstan bars
7 Glad rags: best clothes or clothes used on special occasions
8 Valipo: British English corruption of Valparaiso, the chief port and second largest city of Chile; located on a wide harbor in central Chile
